The Liverpool Blue Coat School is a co-educational grammar school in Liverpool. It was originally founded as the Liverpool Blue Coat Hospital in 1708 and was a boys’ boarding school, before converting to co-educational provision from 2002.

In 2015, The Liverpool Blue Coat School was named the Sunday Times State School of the Year and in the following year, it was ranked as the best school in the country based on its GCSE results. It is consistently named within the top 30 schools in the country – and one of the top three in the North West of England. In 2020, the Real Schools Guide named The Liverpool Blue Coat School as the best school in Merseyside, Halton and Warrington.

Admissions process for The Liverpool Blue Coat School

The Liverpool Blue Coat School admits 180 students to Year 7 each year. It participates in the Liverpool Local Authority Admission arrangements.

All applicants will sit the 11 plus entrance test at The Liverpool Blue Coat School. The ‘required standard’ (also known as the pass mark) is 213. Up to 27 places will be available to the highest-scoring applicants who are eligible for free school meals.

If the number of applicants who reach this score exceeds the 180 places available, places will be offered in accordance with the school’s oversubscription criteria:

  1. Looked after children, previously looked after children and internationally adopted previously looked after children

  2. Children with an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP)

The Trustee Board of the school will share the results of the admission procedure with the local authority. The offer of a place at The Liverpool Blue Coat School will come from the local authority on 1st March 2023.

How to apply for The Liverpool Blue Coat School

Parents/carers can download application packs for more information about the 11 plus entrance exam from the school bweiste between Friday 1st July and Friday 2nd September 2022. You will be able to register your child for the exam between these dates.

Following the results of the 11 plus test and by 31st October 2022, you will need to complete a Local Authority admissions form, naming The Liverpool Blue Coat School as your preference. If you are a resident within the Liverpool City Council Local Authority, this can be done on the Liverpool City Council website.

When is The Liverpool Blue Coat School 11 plus exam taken?

Registration for the 11 plus test at The Liverpool Blue Coat School will be open between Friday 1st July and Friday 2nd September 2022. The 11 plus exam will take place at The Liverpool Blue Coat School on Saturday 24th September 2022.

The results of the exam will be posted to the parents of applicants by 21st October 2022. If you receive confirmation that your child is eligible for a place, you will then have time to complete your Local Authority school preference form (or Common Application Form) before the national deadline of 31st October 2022.

The Liverpool Blue Coat School 11 plus exam format

The 11 plus exam at The Liverpool Blue Coat School consists of one English test and one maths test – both of which are set in-house. The school will send sample materials with your acknowledgement email to help you assist your child with preparation. There is no verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning test.
