Founded in 1561, St Olave’s Grammar School was formerly known as St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Church of England Grammar School. It is a selective grammar school for boys in the London Borough of Bromley, which takes pupils from the ages of 11-18 and now admits girls in the sixth form.
St Olave’s Grammar School is one of the UK’s highest-achieving state schools; in 2008 it was the Sunday Times’ State School of the Year, and in 2011 it was ranked as the fourth best performing state school in the country at A Level by the Financial Times.
St Olave’s Grammar School is a beneficiary of the St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Schools Foundation. The school has a sister school, St Saviour’s and St Olave’s Church of England School, which is a non-selective girls’ school near Elephant and Castle. St Olave’s also has a relationship with Newstead Wood School, a selective girls’ school 1.5 miles away.
The school receives over ten applications per place in Year 7 and therefore has a rigorous admissions process. St Olave's provides choristers for the choir of the Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy.

St Olave’s sets its own 11 plus known as the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), which is designed to determine whether or not candidates are of the school’s required standard. The results are ranked, with the top 450 candidates being invited back to sit the second round of tests.
To register your son to apply for St Olave’s, you must complete the SIF (supplementary information form). This will be available here from Monday 13th June to Monday 4th July.
St Olave School’s Selective Eligibility Test (Stage 1) will take place on Friday 23rd September 2022. Parents/carers will be notified of the outcome of the SET in October, prior to submission of the Online Application Form, available from your Local Authority. The result of this test does not guarantee a place at St Olave’s Grammar School.
Boys passing the SET will then be invited to sit second stage tests in English and maths. This will take place on Friday 11th November 2022. Scores will be standardised and then aggregated, together with the SET marks, to allow a ranking of candidates.
The school admits pupils based on academic ability, as determined by the SET and the stage 2 test. St Olave’s Grammar School has 124 places available for entry into Year 7. The places offered each year will be the number remaining after the school has admitted boys with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who meet the School’s Admission Standard and whose EHCP names St Olave’s Grammar School.
The SET is comprised of logic, maths, and English questions. The stage 2 test has a 60 minute English paper, a half hour break and then a 60 minute maths paper.
Example questions for both the SET and the stage two test are provided here on the school’s website.
