South Hampstead High School is an independent day school for girls aged 4–18 in Hampstead, North West London. It was founded in 1876 by the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) – a network of independent girls’ schools across the country. The school’s headmistress Vicky Bingham is active in educational journalism, with recent articles and interviews appearing in national newspapers including The Times, The Telegraph and The Week.
South Hampstead High School aims to empower girls to prepare for life and work in a rapidly changing world. Lessons are animated by a spirit of enquiry, with the school’s teaching known for its rigour and passion. The teaching and learning approach at South Hampstead High School leads to its academic results being among the best in the country; in 2021, 94% of pupils achieved grades 9–7 (A*–A equivalent) at GCSE, while 95.4% of A levels were graded A*–A.
Learning continues beyond the classroom, with an inspiring variety of over 140 co-curricular clubs and activities to get involved in across the arts and sport (with A to E teams, so that girls of all levels can compete). South Hampstead High School also hosts a Speaker Series – a programme of events with inspirational and influential guests, designed to open minds for both pupils and parents.

All 11 plus applicants will then be invited to sit the entrance test provided by the London 11+ Consortium in early December. Meanwhile, South Hampstead High School will approach your daughter’s current school in late November to ask for a reference or feedback on her social and academic progress. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in January 2023 to confirm whether they are invited to an interview, which will be held in-person at South Hampstead High School in January.
Academic Scholarships are automatically awarded based on the outstanding performance in the 11 plus entrance exam (all candidates are considered and no application is needed). Girls who are applying for Music or Sports Scholarship will undergo additional assessments:
Music Scholarships: candidates are expected to be working at least Grade 6 standard on their first instrument. You will need to submit the Music Scholarship application form, together with a reference from your child’s music teacher, by Friday 11th November 2022. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an audition in mid-January 2023, which will involve a performance of two contrasting pieces, aural tests of Grade 5 standard and a brief discussion of the musical aspects of a short piece of piano music.
Sports Scholarships: Sports Scholarships are offered for girls who regularly compete outside of school in one of South Hampstead’s main sports games (netball, football or cricket), aesthetics (gymnastics or dance) and athletics (track, field or cross-country). To apply, you will need to submit the Sports Scholarship application form by Friday 11th November 2022. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an assessment day in mid-January 2023, which will involve a series of fitness tests, skills/drills/choreography, full games or performance and a short interview with the sports department.
Offers will be made on Friday 10th February 2023. The deadline for acceptance will be 12 noon on Monday 6th March 2023 and a deposit of £2,000 will be required to secure your child’s place.
South Hampstead High School is part of the London 11+ Consortium, a group of London senior schools. Your child only has to take the entrance assessment once to apply to multiple schools in the Consortium.
For Year 7 entry in September 2023 onwards, the London 11+ Consortium is updating the format and content of their entrance assessment. The new process aims to go beyond testing cognitive ability alone and seeks to discover a child’s potential in creative and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and problem-solving.
The new assessment is 100 minutes long (1 hour 40 minutes) with a 30-minute break in the middle.
During the assessment, your child will see a clock on the screen that will count down in minutes showing her how long she has left for each section. It will be visible but not so large as to be distracting.
The South Hampstead High School assessment has six sections, all taken on a computer, in the following order:
Maths – 20 minutes
Non-verbal reasoning – 10 minutes
English comprehension and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) – 20 minutes
Verbal reasoning – 10 minutes
(Break – 30 minutes)
Problem solving – 15 minutes
Analysis – 25 minutes
The first four parts of the assessment are adaptive, which means the questions are tailored to your child’s performance. This method of assessment gives reliable results in assessing cognitive reasoning ability. The final two sections (problem-solving and analysis) will be nonadaptive, meaning all candidates will see exactly the same questions.
