Ermysted’s Grammar School is a selective school for boys in Skipton, North Yorkshire. Founded in the 15th century, it is the seventh oldest state school in Britain. An annual Founders Day is held each autumn to celebrate the school’s history.

There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer (nearly 70 each week), including involvement in ‘The Reason’ – the school’s national-award-winning newspaper. Authors are included in the school’s extensive list of notable former alumni, alongside sportsmen, actors and politicians.

Admissions process for Ermysted’s Grammar School

Ermysted’s Grammar School is responsible for its 11 plus testing arrangements, rather than the Local Authority (as it has been historically).

Ermstyed’s Grammar School has 124 places available for boys in Year 7 in 2023. All applicants will need to sit the 11 plus exam at the school on Saturday 24th September. Parents will receive letters from the school during the week commencing 10th October 2022 with the outcome of the exam and whether your child has received the required standard (the scores themselves will not be released to ensure that all candidates who have reached this standard start at the school on an equal footing).

Children with an Education, Heath and Care Plan (EHCP) which names Ermysted’s Grammar School will be admitted. Then, if the number of children who achieve the required standard exceeds the number of places available (124), the school will apply the following oversubscription criteria:

  1. Looked after children and previously looked after children who have achieved the required standard

  2. Children who have reached the required standard and whose primary residence is within the catchment area (see below) at the time of application

  3. Children who have reached the required standard and whose primary residence is outside the catchment area (see below) at the time of application.

What is the catchment area for Ermysted’s Grammar School?

The catchment area for Ermysted’s Grammar School included Beamsley, Bradley, Burnsall, Carleton, Cracoe, Embsay, Gargrave, Grassington, Kettlewell, Kirkby-in-Malhamdale, Skipton, Thornton-in-Craven and Threshfield. How to apply for Ermysted’s Grammar School

If you are interested in registering their son for a place at Ermysted’s Grammar School, it is recommended that you visit the school for the opene vening on Tuesday 5th July 2022 to have a chance to look around and ask questions. This will give you plenty of time to decide if it is the right school for your child ahead of the deadline for test registrations, which is 5th September 2022.

As a state school, you will also need to name Ermysted’s Grammar School on your Local Authority Common Application Form (CAF). The closing date for this, regardless of which LA you reside in, is 31st October 2022. Parents of children who live in North Yorkshire will be able to apply here.

When is the Ermysted’s Grammar School 11 plus exam taken?

Registration for the 11 plus test at Ermysted’s Grammar School is currently open and will close on Tuesday 5th September 2022. The test will take place on Saturday 24th September and results will be issued to parents during the week commencing 10th October.

Offers of places will then be sent to parents during the first week of March in 2023.

Ermysted’s Grammar School 11 plus exam format

The 11 plus exam at Ermysted’s Grammar School is provided by GL Assessment.

Pupils will take two multiple-choice papers, each approximately 50 minutes in length. Each paper contains timed sections:

  • Maths and non-verbal reasoning

  • English and verbal-reasoning

For each paper, children will be given a question book and a separate answer sheet on which to mark their answers. These answer sheets will be processed electronically and scanned to make a digital record of each candidate’s answers. The scores for both papers will be combined, standardised and adjusted for differences in the age of the candidates, before they are added together to produce a candidate’s overall score.
