Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School traces its history back to Newchurch Grammar School, which was founded in 1703. The core of the staff formed Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School at the existing site in 1913. It is larger than the average secondary school in England and specifically serves the communities of the Rossendale Valley.
The school prides itself on its traditional values and strong ‘family’ ethos, serving the families of Rossendale and beyond. In 2017, the school undertook a process that involved both staff and students to establish core values that define the school community. These are support, trust, ambition, respect, resilience and opportunity.
Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School has an extensive list of notable former pupils, including several sportspeople and actors. It is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

As an academy, the Academy Trust of Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School (BRGS) is the admissions authority. This authority has determined that the school is established primarily for the education of children attending Rossendale schools (refer to the catchment area below).
The planned admission number (PAN) for 2023 at Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School is 180. The school selects its entire intake on the basis of high academic ability; if applicants have not reached the required standard as part of the selection procedure, the school does not need to fill all the places available.
However, if the number of applicants who reach the required standard in the 11 plus exceeds 180, Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School will apply the following oversubscription criteria:
Looked after and previously looked after children
Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School
Pupils attending Area 1 primary schools (see below), ranked in order of overall entrance exam mark
Pupils attending Area 2 primary schools (see below), ranked in order of overall entrance exam mark
Pupils not attending Area 1 or 2 primary schools (see below), ranked in order of overall entrance exam mark
The admissions authority of Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School is clear that children attending Rossendale primary schools are prioritised. Schools are separated into two areas:

Parents will need to register their child for the 11 plus test at Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School before 12 noon on Tuesday 21st June 2022. The registration form is available on the school’s admissions site.
You will also need to complete the Common Application Form for your local authority to apply for a place at the school. For Year 7 places in 2023, this will open on 1st September 2022 and must be submitted by 31st October 2022. Residents within the county of Lancashire can register for a school place here.
Parents will receive notification of their child’s performance in the Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School 11 plus test in October (in advance of the deadline for the Local Authority Common Application Form). However, as the number of candidates who reach the required standard in the exam may be greater than the number of places available, parents should be aware that their child’s exam result does not guarantee entry.
Unlike the other grammar schools in Lancashire, Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School recently changed its 11 plus exam provider to CEM.
Candidates will sit two papers (both just under an hour each) that cover a range of subjects. CEM 11 plus tests commonly assess reading comprehension, numerical reasoning (maths), verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Each paper tends to be made up of smaller sub-sections that are separately timed.
Start early. We suggest beginning the 11 plus preparation journey at the end of Year 4 or beginning of Year 5. Your child should feel completely confident with the Key Stage 2 core curriculum content before they begin targeted exam preparation. Having a solid understanding of the content will help boost confidence and subject mastery ahead of the exam.
Friendly familiarisation. The 11 plus exam will contain question styles that your child has likely not come across before – particularly in verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. With Atom’s Exam Preparation Plus package, your child will be able to take as many mock tests as necessary to feel comfortable with the format and style of the Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School 11 plus exam.
Read widely. Many questions in the CEM exam will require your child to have an excellent understanding of the English language. Reading widely across traditional and contemporary texts will support their exam preparation. Find free resources to help your child engage with reading here.
