There are 65–75 places available for boys at Year 9. There are further places available for girls and boys to enter the school in Year 12. In addition to this, boys may enter the Under School in Years 2, 3 or 6.

deadline – July of Year 5 Parents should get in contact with the school Admissions Team to ask for a registration form.
Autumn term of Year 6 All applicants are now required to take The ISEB Common Pre-Tests, usually at the candidate's current school.
January – March of Year 6 Successful candidates will be invited for interview at Winchester. This will take the form of a 45-minute discussion and a short maths test. Some sources report being asked to analyse a poem or a piece of prose as well.
April of Year 6 Results from the pre-test and interview will be considered and results sent to parents. You will either receive a House Place (at a specific boarding house), a General Place (where the house will be finalised later), a Reserve List place, or a message explaining that no offer will be made. All offers are conditional on entrance exams.
April of Year 8 The Winchester academic scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance of examinations called ‘The Election', which are held over three days at the school. Compulsorily exams must be sat in English, maths, science and a general logical reasoning paper. In addition, at least three optional papers must be sat from a choice of Latin, French, Greek, history, geography, a further maths paper or a further general paper.
Summer term of Year 8 Winchester does not use the Common Entrance exam. Instead, offers are conditional on passing the Winchester Entrance or Scholarship Exams, which are taken in May of Year 8. The Winchester Entrance exams follow the same syllabus at Common Entrance.
