Merchant Taylors' School


There are 100 places available for boys to join in Year 9. Many boys enter in Year 7, where there are 170 places, and there is also an opportunity for limited numbers to join in Year 12. Merchant Taylors' Prep School accepts boys of any age up to Year 6. The admissions policy for 13+ entry is midway through changing. For those entering in 2022 or beyond, a different procedure will be followed. This page shows both policies, but for more details please visit the school website.

Open Days

School Examinations

January of Year 8 or January of Year 6 (2022 onwards) From 2022 entry onwards, candidates will sit examinations in Year 6. They will consist of English, maths and a general paper. Offers for entry before 2022 will be made conditional on school exams in:

  • Maths: calculator – 1 hour
  • English: comprehension and composition – 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics papers – 20 minutes each
  • Humanities: history, geography and religious studies – 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Modern Languages: French, German or Spanish – 45 minutes
  • Latin: non-compulsory
  • Verbal Reasoning: reserved for candidates whose school's do not offer all syllabuses

Other Assessments and Interviews

May/June of Year 7 or September/October of Year 6 After receiving an application, the school will request a confidential reference from the candidate's current Head Teacher. Candidates will then be asked for interview. This will last around 30 minutes and consist of problem solving, questions on a prose passage and a discussion of current affairs.


February of Year 7 or November of Year 6 (2022 onwards) Following the interview, the school will write to parents with either a offer conditional on performance in entrance exams, or a letter explaining that the application will not be taken forward. Following the examinations (listed below) a further letter will be sent offering either an unconditional place, a place on the waiting list, or no offer.


April of Year 8 There are no separate scholarship papers in the entrance examinations. Awards are given to boys who perform exceptionally well in these examinations and at a separate interview; information received from the boy's current school is taken into account.

13+ Common Entrance

Merchant Taylors' does not use Common Entrance, but from 2022 entrance and onwards, school exams will be sat in January of Year 8 for the purposes of setting.

Admissions Fees

Deposit requested: £450 (March – refundable before interview), £600 (upon receipt of offer). From 2022 onwards the deposit will be: £1,050 (November – refundable if examinations are not passed), £1,000 (January of Year 7)
