Merchant Taylors’ School is an independent boys school, founded by Thomas White of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors in 1561. Merchant Taylors’ School prides itself on tailoring its curriculum to the individual student. Boys joining the school in Year 7 study a broad curriculum of 12 subjects. They then have a choice of 21 subjects at IGCSE / GCSE and 26 subjects at A level.
We would recommend arranging to visit the school on an open day, or arranging a private visit.

The registration deadline is the 31st October in Year 6, however we would strongly recommend registering earlier than this where possible. Many parents register their son by the end of Year 5. Please note that the deadline for scholarship and bursary applications is in early September, so registration in advance is recommended.
After registration the school will request a report from your son’s current Headteacher.
Boys will be invited to sit an entrance test in early January of Year 6. Boys who are successful here will be invited to return to the school for an interview in late January or early February.
The admissions test is made up of three papers including English, Maths and a General Paper.
The General Paper replaced an earlier Verbal Reasoning Paper, and may still contain VR questions along with other problem solving challenges designed to test reasoning and creativity.
We would recommend preparing for this test by ensuring that your son has a comprehensive understanding of the KS2 national curriculum. The campaign area of Atom Nucleus will help to ensure you have spent the optimal amount of time in each subject and close any gaps in knowledge. For the General Paper, we recommend becoming familiar with the various styles of reasoning that these questions require. Atom Nucleus allows you to do unlimited practice questions, and is packed with high quality videos and helpsheets to help develop your understanding. This is a powerful tool, proven to significantly improve performance in VR and NVR. Atom Nucleus also allows you to take unlimited practice tests - these will help you to identify your son’s strengths and weaknesses so he can use his time as effectively as possible in revision.
To learn how to get the most from Atom Nucleus, you can book a free place on a Nucleus Webinar.
