There are approximately 6 places available for entry into Year 9. For entry into Year 5 there are 48 places and for Year 6 there are 96 places. In addition to this, there are a further 20 places available for pupils to join in Year 12.

January of Year 8 Candidates will be asked to provide a copy of their school report from the end of Year 7. Emanuel School will also seek a reference from the candidate's current headteacher. Candidates will then be asked to sit school examinations in:
Those who reach the minimum pass mark are called back for interview soon after the exam. This will consist of a discussion of academic and co-curricular interests, as well as a short discussion about the stimulus material (an article or photograph), which aims to test the candidate's ability in maths and English.
February of Year 8 Results from the examinations, interview and headteacher's report will be considered and offers for places at the school will be sent by first class post to parents.
Academic scholarships are awarded to those who perform exceptionally well in their examinations and interview. All boys who sit the entrance examinations are automatically considered for an academic scholarship. There is no separate scholarship exam.
Summer term of Year 8 Offers from this school do not require a certain grade at Common Entrance.
